Interview with Paul Lais, the architect
“Sthapatya Veda: what does it mean?
It is the knowledge of structure coming from the ancient Vedic civilisation in India, and recently revived by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. It provides the knowledge and technique of how to construct a building in accord with natural law, enabling us to get maximum support from nature and the environment.
Could you explain the main principles of Sthapatya Veda?
Sthapatya Veda means orderliness. In terms of buildings it means that cosmic rules are embedded into the building structure, the same rules which govern and administer the entire universe. By that, every part of the building has a unique and special relationship to the whole.
As a result of these relationships between parts and whole, through correct alignment, new and higher qualities are created. These qualities are Vastu and Brahmasthan.
Vastu is the name for the area inside the perimeter line (fence) around the house. It is divided into different areas with different attributes. These attributes represent special benefits which can be enlivened through proper design.
The Brahmasthan is the centre of the building whose all parts are related to, like the perimeter of a circle to its centre. Through this relationship between centre and parts a special energy arises, which nourishes the residents of the building. The area of the Brahmasthan is left free from obstructing elements such as pillars or walls.

What are the benefits one can expect from sleeping and receiving treatments in a Sthapatya Veda clinic?
When a building is designed according to this system a multitude of benefits arise for the inhabitants. In the case of the new clinic it means that visitors will gain more support during their Ayur Vedic treatments. They will experience more happiness, clarity of mind and creative thinking, tranquillity and peace of mind, more energy and less fatigue, mental alertness and refreshment.
The new treatment rooms inside the Vastu-Chalet are more silent. The association of a bathroom to each treatment room increases the feeling of comfort. The furnishing is simple and practical, the cream color hues are very relaxing, and the Sthapatya-vedic atmosphere is quite regenerating.
The new bed-rooms are quiet and luminous with pacifying light colors. First residents have reported a very good quality of sleep, and deep meditations.
We now have a telephone in all rooms.
